NorCal FJs' first Adopt-A-Trail outing was a resounding success. we collected quite a bit of garbage, winched a log off the trail, and took photos of areas that needed repair or additional signage to keep drivers on the trail. overall, the trail itself was in decent shape, which is a good thing. we even met with a representative of the Eldorado National Forest, who was kind enough to haul out most of the garbage we had collected.
we collected an estimated 200 lbs. of garbage with a majority of it coming from a group campsite near the trailhead. the area was in obvious neglect with broken glass bottles (shooting targets) and shell casings strewn throughout the area. we spent a good two hours or so in that area and still could not get all the shards of glass out of the dirt. we did the best we could and got all the sightly items out of sight.
we then drove up the trail slowly scoping out the trailsides for additional refuse and stopping at the various dispersed campsites along the trail. we found some interesting items people had left. the trail had obviously not been cleaned for a quite a while judging by some of the things we found.
here are some of the items we cleared out:
- 10' cable (approx. 2" in diameter)
- BBQ grill grate
- Shot up private property sign
- Cross member
- 5' corrugated pipe
- 100s of shell casings
- Tent stakes
- Tent bag
- Guylines
- Broken bottles
- Plastic bottles
- Cardboard
after the cleanup, we met up to discuss next steps, including (in no particular order):
- Purchase of additional equipment
- Trash grabbers
- Magnetic device to pick up casings
- Rake/sifter to pick up glass shards
- Build a trail kiosk
- Forest service to supply specs
- NorCal FJs to purchase wood and materials
- DWH to do woodwork
in doing so, we will be able to have the needed tools and equipment to efficiently care for the trail and create a kiosk that will provide information about the trail and Tread Lightly! principles.
it was a great first outing that has laid the foundation for future cleanup runs. we also encourage anyone who does the trail to keep an eye out for any litter and do your part to help keep the trail in excellent condition. after all, it is our responsibility.

i had a blast. can't wait to get the kiosk up and to do additional repair work on the trail. plenty of dispersed campsites on the trail and tucked away...we should plan a little celebration of some sort when the kiosk goes up.
hope those of you who couldn't make it this time around make it out to the next one!

For those that participated, I thought you might like to read this. It is from the Forest Service Rep that met us on the trail.
Thanks for the pictures and it looks really good! I have the specs (for the kiosk) and I'll get those to you ASAP. Pass on a big Thank You to the club and I think this will be a positive and fun partnership for all. Keep in contact and I will see you soon.
