FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hey guys,

 

I am thinking about getting as set of 315/75/16 (roughly 35s).  I have read in some places that once you hit the 35 inch threshold, you might run into re-gearing issues.  Is this true?  I really dont know much about it and if that is the case then I will just go with the 33's.  Also, I was planning on getting a Radflo complete 3inch coilover lift.  Not even sure if it will fit the 35's.

To re-gear to 456 what's the cost (parts/labor)?  What parts are needed?  Any recommendations?  I've been debating the re-gear for a while now...I keep telling myself (Christine) I am done modding the rig.  Yeah right!
About $1500 Parts and labor if everything is pristine, but I highly suggest replacing the drivers side needle bearing while it is apart, just for peace of mind.

ok I just got off the phone with Bozly and you will need: the gears, the solid pinion spacer, install kit and the larger of the two bearings in the rear for the e-locker (you will have to get this part directly from Toyota, call One Toyota or Tracy Toyota and tell the parts guy you are a part of NorCal FJs for the 20% discount)

Nitro (they suck, Bozly and C4B have broken 6 sets between them) is the only manufacturer who makes the 4.56 gears for the front.

Yukon and Superior make the best gears out there but, only offer 4.56 for the rear

Boz also suggested that if you are gonna re-gear you should go ahead and go with the 4.88s. In which case you can get both front and rear gear sets from Yukon or Superior

Check into this more.  I was always under the impression that 4:88 would require a carrier change in the front for automatics.  There is a carrier break from the auto to the manual.

Your right, you need the mt front carrier for 4:88 gears.

In answer to the Radflo portion of your post I love the ones I just installed so far (only been a week or two) and can't say enough good things about their customer service through the process. I'm glad I did the research and listened to others advice. I run both 285 and 305 tires depending on street or non street travel and like the idea of 35's but have not needed them yet enough to justify the expense. That comment is not to knock anyone's preference at all. If I had my way I'd have about 4 FJ's all built differently for different needs, but we all have to compromise sometimes. Very few modifications can justify the expense of a divorce attorney no matter how cool they are.
