I'm thinking of going up to some 33" tires soon. What effect do they have on the auto trans, does the trany hunt for gears or are they close enough to stock. What happens to MPG? Should I consider going taller than 33"? Any other info is appreciated.

I don't notice any difference except for MPG. I think I lost about two or three. Any bigger and I think it would involve body cuts/welding and too much CV pressure.
If you go taller than 33" you should think about re-gearing. If you don't I think you'll find that the auto trans will 'hunt' for the right gear when going uphills (freeway)
I installed 33" tires about 5K miles after I bought my FJ. I lost about 1.5 to 2 mpg on my commute to and from work. The transmission does not have a problem "hunting" for a gear. The stock tires are 32" already so going to 33's is not much of an increase, less than 10%.

I agree with dapit, if you go bigger than 33's you may want to regear.
thanks guys for the info, now I just need to decide on what I want and find a good deal.
I have a set of used Goodyear MTR's. 285/70R17 ~ roughly 33's. has about 80-90% tread on them. looking to get $600 for the set of 5. Only reason I took them off is because I upgraded to 35's.
Thanks I'll keep these in mind. How would you rate the road noise? From 1 - 10, 10 being really noisy. I was thinking of a tire that is more a of an AT, BFG, Tera Grapler, TOYO, etc. MT's seem to be a too noisy for me.

Anybody want to rate the noise of their tires?
i have Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo tires and love them. just wish they looked a bit more aggressive. i took into account the percentages (on-road vs. off-road), road noise and wear and figured ATs were the most cost effective for me. ideally, if i had a garage, i would run ATs and have a spare set of MTs ready to go for tougher trails. in terms of rating road noise, i would say very low - perhaps a 3? let me know if you want to test drive my truck.
I followed Potato's lead on this and haven't regretted it.
about a 4
I've had 12.50x33"/17's for about two years now with the only "problems" being gas mileage. For me i lost about 3 MPG. Other than that no problems.
I installed P265/70R-17 Michelin LTX A/T 2 back in January...LOVE THEM! Extreamly quiet "1" and awesome in the mud. Try www.tirerack.com for the best deal.
