Here's our tentative plan: Leave the 15th AM, over Tioga Pass, overnight in Ely, on to Ouray by the afternoon of the 16th. No interstates, no Motel 6, no boredom. After all, I'm not taking a Buick Roadmaster wagon to Iowa to visit aunt Millie.

On the way back: Moab, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, Grand Canyon, maybe Death Valley, maybe back over Tioga Pass. Play it by ear.

For a route like this and giving sufficient time for extra attractions. How many days including the summit are we looking at?

July 15: NorCal to Ely, NV
July 16: Ely, NV to Ouray, CO
July 17, 18, 19: Ouray, CO
July 20: Ouray, CO to Moab, UT
July 21: Monument Valley, UT, Canyon de Chelly, AZ
July 22: Grand Canyon, AZ
July 23: Death Valley, CA
July 24: back to NorCal
