It's that time of year again... Esprit de Four is hosting its semi-annual Safety Clinic at Hollister Hills SVRA on Saturday, May 18th. As part of the event, participants can camp out in Area 5 on Friday and Saturday nights. Camping and day use fees are included in the cost of the clinic. I am a member of Esprit de Four and will be volunteering at the event.
This is a great introduction to basic off-road driving skills. It's where I spent my first day off-road in my FJ, and I found it extremely helpful. The morning starts with a classroom session and equipment demos. You will learn many safety tips, such as what to do if you feel your truck starting to roll over (a great technique I've made successful use of 3 times now). In the afternoon, you will head out in small groups. Experienced spotters will take you through several obstacles at the main obstacle course (everything is optional) and various exercises such as tire placement, followed by a couple of trails. If the Ravine / V-notch is not too rutted out, you will have the chance to be guided through that challenging obstacle by spotters with decades of experience (that's the part that got me hooked on wheeling!). There is a barbeque and slide show at the end of the day.
All makes and models of 4WD vehicles are welcome. This clinic isn't just for newbies. It's also great for those with some experience to expand their knowledge and get some one-on-one instruction.

We had a great time. Realized we took off without saying bye, sorry!
The gate to Area 5 should remain open - I didn't get there until after 9 when I did the clinic. Once you guys get there, you can set up camp anywhere there's space.
We are leaving Sac tonight at about 5 - hope they dont lock the gates after dark?
Just registered.
Revoked: Wanted to camp this weekend, but doesn't look like it's happening.
We are planning on camping Friday night, anyone else?
Wanted to do slick rock, but since I don't have any armor other than rails I think I will see if there's new techniques to keep my rig in one piece instead.
Looking forward to getting a feel for the Hundy offroad. I really want to learn to pick lines for myself, seeing as how I am driving a boat now lol.
