National Public Lands Day:

Volunteer opportunity: TBD on Saturday AM

this is the official thread for the annual High Sierra run. despite having considered moving to an alternating base camp/expedition style run, we'll stick with the base camp idea this year. we'll establish base camp on Laurel Lakes trail again.

395 to Trail Head: http://bit.ly/cwHI0p
Approximately 1.5 miles of dirt road once you get off 395 at Sherwin Creek Road

the High Sierra run, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the format, is part trail run, part vacation. we will only establish 2-3 "official" trail runs and the rest of the activities are planned impromptu or on-your-own. last year, several folks went fishing, kayaking and sightseeing. more details on the planned runs will be outlined in the coming weeks, but will most likely include Coyote Flat, Mono Craters and yearly favorite, Kavanaugh Ridge.

also, i am looking into a possible volunteer opportunity for National Public Lands Day on Saturday, the 25th. i will most likely propose something in the nearby Mammoth area...perhaps a trail clean-up. for those of you who are unfamiliar with National Public Lands Day, it is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to help sure-up and clean-up our public lands. it also allows free admission to most national parks and monuments (Yosemite, Devil's Postpile and Mono Lake included).

maybe ill try for Thursday night, I work till 8pm so I'll see how much energy I have to make a 5 hour drive after that.
sure, no worries. you definitely don't want to do that drive if you are exhausted.
might have to load up on the red bull's!!!!!
5-Hour Energy is better.
So if I head up late Thursday night would you recommend taking CA-120 or CA-108 considering it will be around midnight/ 1am?
108 is twisty turny for a long time and sucks to drive at night, however while 120 is a better drive, do the speed limit and stay on the beam in the park cuz the feds are bored and love to pull you over if you look even a little bit sus.
btw, if i forgot to mention it in the PM, please bring some firewood if you can. i think Bz and Bozly are planning on bringing some for the main campfire, but it's always good to have some more considering how cold it will be in the evening. also, each of the secluded campsites have fire rings, so you can also warm up to your own personal campfire before you hit the sack.

we will also be at a premium for flat space, so we'll have to tent out relatively close to each other like we did at AllCal. there will be a designated "quiet" area (see the map link I sent to you and look for Sonof40's Shangri-La) and for those of you who like total seclusion, there will be a hike-in area as well. we will scope out the lot and provide everyone with options as they check into camp. just look for me.
Ok debating bringing my trailer 6x12 enclosed (it generally serves as my toy hauler/tent) or roughing it in the fj I hate tents. Any input with out it I can go faster on the drive with it I can bring a full BBQ, a quad, wood and anything else one might need. what do you guys think I have never been there before. I am dreading the drive already I hate driving through yosemite I have to do it once a year when I make my annual trip to Nevada around July forth para Los artifuegos so I know it sucks, with the trailer 108 would be bad with out it it would be fine.
I am 6 foot and I've slept in the back of the FJC, it is definitely doable. You just need to sleep at an angle, move the front passenger seat all the way forward, and have a some material to level out the rear cargo area. I think the rear cargo area is 3/4" lower than the seat backs.

Is your toy hauler lifted? The trail up to Laurel Lakes is pretty rutted and rocky.
I am driving 108 for sure, I love that road. I've never had a trailer so I do not know how it is with one.
given the fact that you are only going to be there for a couple days, i would consider going without it. as PB mentioned, the beginning of the trail can be rutted out and i had heard it's a little worse this year.
Okay I guess I am roughing it. It's not the first time I have had to sleep in the fj and deffinatly not the last. It's not that bad drink a little and sleep like a baby in there.
