FJ Cruisers of Northern California

CentralCalFJ (Dave) and I from Step~Cal~FJ's did an outing today at Pine Mountain!
pretty cool stuff and my stock FJ took it like a champ! although, armor
and a small lift would have helped out. the steps were nasty and if
attempted by a stocker you might get to the bottom by rolling over and
over again! over all freaking awesome  day and for me getting
de-virgin'ized!! and kutoes to Dave and his son on spotting!!!

Pine Mountain was a great run. I have some pics of the steps that we didn't do. Anyone who has done these my hat goes off to you....

have you tried to drive through the part on last photos ?
No, that is one section of about five of the steps. I didn't think an IFS FJ with 33's and a 3" lift could do it without a lot of damage. If anyone wants to give it a shot I will be glad to go back. The pictures don't show how hard the obstacles are IMO. Two of the steps are very close together and would be a bitch; this last section is steep and would be the hardest part to get down (the rocky section pictured). The turnaround at the sign is 3/4 or more of the way through the run, that’s where we went back. You could run it backwards to the steps and go up them also, it would be faster to get to them that way.
Good Stuff
Maybe make it a point to do the steps next year, gives ya plenty of time to mod and be ready for it.
Hi Dave
Great pics. Where was Pine Mountain as we are looking for somIething to do next weekend as a day run only Maciek has not had much FJ time so needs a run before he travels again.

I just got back from a secret squirrel weekend at Crab Flast campground. (san bernadino NF) If was a blast. Time for a nap now.
Its off Pozo Road in San Luis Obispo county. North on 101 past San Luis and turn right to Santa Margarita, go past the lake to Pozo then head up. It's a great run for central cal. If your coming from Oakland the turn to Santa Margarita is about 30 miles before you get to San Luis.
after i get armor for the FJ, i'm sooo going down the steps on my Mt.bike!!
Thanks for the info. Bit far for a day run but an overnighter might be in order.
There are a few other trails around there. Garcia Ridge is okay, brush is tight though, you pass the turn off for it on the way to Pine Mountain. Plenty of camp spots near that area. They do the Garcia Ridge run after Surf N Turf as an unofficial run and hit the Pozo Saloon. SNT may be a good time to try the steps if anyone wants to do them. Not too far from Pozo if you go the back way to them. This is the local area map if you can read it.

It runs the border of the california condor area. The red trail on the map along the top of the wilderness area is Pine Mountain. We saw four of the big birds flying around on the trail. Well worth a visit.

there is a story about the "massacre on Garcia Ridge" from SnT '08. a few of us chose to take the westward route (forgot the trail name) that ended up at Pozo. pretty mild, but scenic. the trail you guys did looks pretty cool...may check that out someday.
