Clear Creek

who knows the details behind Clear Creek Management Area? i do know that they closed it because of a so-called asbestos hazard, but if this report is true, then we should definitely fight to keep this area open by signing this petition.

technically, we should have the right to determine whether or not we want to risk our own safety by going into the area, but i can see selfish people suing the state in the future if they get diagnosed with health issues. at the same time, i'm not sure i would want to go if i did know the area was a public health hazard.

I am no expert on asbestos, but the county where I live (El Dorado) has asbestos in the ground and in the serpentine gravel used on many roads. There have been many maps made and many political fights over it. In the end it is all over the place up here and it can not really be avoided. Maybe it is not the harmful type or maybe the exposure is not enough to be a problem. I would agree that unless the exposure levels are so great that you are in imminent danger, an individual should be able to make their own choice.

Most of the studies I have seen are based on prolonged exposure (40 hour work weeks). The exposure from visiting a site for a few days is not statistically relevant.

I don't think the exposure is that big a problem for the occasional weekend warrior. Seems more like another excuse to close a park.

There is alot of asbestos in clear creek. Attached is a picture of a white hill- that entire hill is asbestos.

Before the closure, clear creek was only open during the rainy season, as they felt only the dust was dangerous. I never felt worried about being in the area. Clear creek is very unique, and allows some amazing fun trips exploring central california.

I too hope it opens up again.
