FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Got rid of my Forester which had been giving me problems for a high mileage (145k) TRD SE FJ.  Probably won't put more than 5k/year on it so mileage didn't bother me.

Wondering if anyone here might know the history of it.  Seems to have a few issues I need to get fixed (needs new brakes, wheel balancing, maybe new bearings) but loving it so far even with the issues!

Welcome, very nice score.  Looks very nice and digging on that bumper.  I got my fj in January, its an 07, and I get so jealous when I see other people's fj's sporting that awesome bumper.  Maybe next year I'll be able to add one to mine.  Do you plan on doing any 4wd?  Day trip coming up in a couple of weeks near tahoe, I"m stock and was told no problems as there are bypasses..

...and howdy from Yosemite.

Hello from Sacramento. I agree you should consider the Long Canyon Trail trip 4/11. You need to register ahead of time with the Forest Service but that info is on the link to the event.

Nice ride.

Steve Hope.

I've never been wheeling so this is a first for me.  That trip sounds like fun but I think I have some work to do still.  I'm not super handy but looks like I need to change out the front sway endlinks and probably need to put in some new bearings.  If anyone knows of a good shop to look over my suspension as well that'd be great!

Welcome to the forum.

What symptoms does your cruiser have that makes you believe those parts need to be changed?

BTW, I am the organizer of the Long Canyon trip on the 11th. It really is a pretty easy run if you are interested. I have taken lots of first timers through.

Thanks DWH,

Been using it as my daily to see what I need to fix.  I get a very strong shake at highway speeds 50mph+ which wasn't there before.  Having an alignment and balance done to see if that was the cause of it first.  Hopefully that's all it was.

I also get a clunk when making right turns.  Took a look underneath and saw that the bushing on the endlink is pretty much crumbling so I figure I should replace the whole thing.

CV boot clamps look like they're gone too as grease is seeping out.

Probably stuff I should of noticed first before taking it.  Basically it doesn't feel very "solid" to me the way it's driving right now.

I found when I had to change my CV boots it was easier to change the entire axle. The axles can be had from many locations. I got mine from NAPA for about $75 each. If you are willing to drive to Placerville, I could help you change them out.

If the drivelines have grease fittings, you might try lubricating those as well.

Good luck getting it worked out.

Cool, that's really kind of you DWH.  Definitely beyond my skillset doing that.  I'm hoping just adding some grease and clamping will be good for now, otherwise I may take you up on the offer :)
