FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hey there... I'm heading out to Moab in early June (not for wheeling, but for a photography workshop)... and was wondering if anyone has any feedback on route to take. (Debating on going north through Sacaramento/SLC, or south Through Bakersfield and Las Vegas...)

Thanks!

... i would like to know as well.. I really want to go out there sometime with some friends to drive around and photog!

Bakersfield to Las Vegas is what I always take.

I've gone the Vegas route & the SLC route. They are both fairly boring routes, but Vegas is the worst of the two.

I don't take either one...I take hwy 50 because it is the shortest distance. It takes a little longer, but that means your speed is a little less, so you get better mpg.

x2 on taking 50. Over 100 miles shorter. And I hate freeways.

Here are the two ways I've gone to Moab:

  1. Down to Vegas - 15 - 50 - 191
  2. 580 - 120 - through Bishop - 6 - 375 (Extraterrestrial Hwy) - 93 - 56 - through Cedar City - 15 - 50 - 191

This was the way Leonie and I went.  It probably isn't the fastest path but it is more direct and has rather interesting scenery.   Just watch out for the open range cattle grazing and there is one stretch of highway where there is no gas so you need to fill up at the last station.

Cool... Thanks everyone.

I definitely have some planning to do...

I've taken Vegas (I5, I15, I70, 191) and Salt Lake City (80, 15S, Rt 6, 191) routes as well.

Was very tempted to try 50 (just after Reno) but didnt pull the trigger bc I was unclear about traffic lights and other hindrances.

All in, I found the SLC route to be *much* more enjoyable than the Vegas route. The big risk is on 80 in winter/spring but I think there's no risk in June.
