Indian Valley Reservoir/Baldy Mnt/Bartlett Springs Trip

Hi FJers,

I was going to do a trip soon, this weekend or next north of Sacremento. I need some help finding a trail though. It appears that there are several trails near the Indian Valley Reservoir, I have a sneaky feeling that they are primarily hiking trails and would not appreciate me wheeling through. Basically my plan is to hit a trail, get out in the wilderness, pitch camp spend the night, and head back on Sunday. Does anyone know of something like that up in that area, There is Wilbur Springs, Coyote Peak, Blue Ridge North, County Line Ridge, Cold Springs Mnt, Baldy Mnt, Bald Hill and three sisters that I can see on a topography map up there. Anyone know of something I can head to, or direct me to some research to find some spots? Thanks guys

Check out the post by Estysalinas about his trip to Mendocino National Forest - it covers the area you are interested in. Check for seasonal closures, though all main roads should be open. Watch out for roads that cross streams / rivers - there are no bridges and water levels can rise rapidly in the rainy (?) season. Also be prepared for snow as elevations in the northern parts of the forest exceed 8000 ft. This is some of the best time to visit the forest - dust is down - few people - pot growers are inactive. You can certainly have a great adventure up there.

Try the Snow Mountain wilderness, good county dirt roads from the valley side and nice camp spots at the trai head into the wilderness area. Good luck

GUYS!!! THOSE ARE PERFECT!! That is exactly the type of tip I was looking for. I was searching all around that area and for some reason COMPLETELY skipping Mendo. I called a ranger station and got all the info I needed to plan a great trip. Thank you very much.

Just wanted to let everyone know, I am back safe from Mendo National, it was a total blast, exactly what I had in mind, (although a bit more mud would have been welcomed). I took plenty of pics and will post a blog about it for everyone else interested in that type of travel. Thanks again for the suggestions to go there, it was total perfection.
