FJ Cruisers of Northern California
Hey All. Happy holidays. I have just changed my lift from a 3" Icon to a 6" Rough Country lift. Previously, the ride was great. The lift looks amazing, and I did leave the Icon shocks in the front. The front supension works great, but the rear suspension, way too hard. All I can get out of the back of the rig is a good bounce. Is anyone aware of whether it would be the shocks or the springs that are causing the bad ride or had this experiance? I did go onto the Rough Country site and there isn't any information about the shocks or the spring ratings. I'll change whichever it takes, I just need to know which it is. Thanx

Long story short, the Icon 3" lift is not intended to be run with a Rough Country 6" lift. Icon makes specific shocks and c/o's for a 6" application. Your shocks and c/o's are probably running at full extension, which is why you've got a rough ride.
Other than looks, I don't see the purpose of switching out the Icon 3" for a Rough Country 6".
Hello and thanx daPitbull.I actually think that I may not have made myself clear. The front suspension works great and that is where I have the Icon shocks with the Rough Country suspension. Absolutely no problem at all with the front suspension. The rear suspension is all Roough Country and that's where the stiff ride is happening. I actually changed from the 3" to the 6" kit, because I play in the snow as much as possible.I have been wheeling for lots of years and have not had as many problems in the snow as I do now. I have friends with FJ's and they have the same problem with getting stuck in the snow. A couple of them have changed over to 6" lifts to accomidate 35s instead of 33s. They have been doing much better in the snow now. Thanx again.
DItto on the shocks. Icons are designed to work with their spring ratings, and Rough Country should have had shocks for their springs. Most likely the Icon's are at full extension, which means they have little up travel. They are valved to "slow" down as they move from neutral to max extension and max compression. You need longer shocks, with valving designed for those springs.
What made you switch to rough country? Are you running 35's?
I had a OME 3' ...went to a RC 6' and had the same issue. When I installed my after market Fab Four rear bumper (185 Lbs) the issue went away. you need to add some weight to your back end to fix the issue. After the bumper install my rig rode great.
Thanx BIB. I appreciate you taking the time to help me with this. This is kind of what I've been thinking. I'll through some sand bags in the back and see if this helps, if it does, I'll go to a lighter spring. Thanx again.
