FJ Cruisers of Northern California

hey StepCalers! i've discussed with a couple of StepCalers the possibility of someday hosting an AllCal in your region and wanted to know if you had any recommendations that might serve as a good venue. some of the criteria would be:
  • Access to a large network of trails
  • Large group camping area
  • Relatively accessible
i know the Shaver Lake/Bald Mountain area has a large network of trails, but not sure about large group camping areas. the Mojave and Lone Pine areas are another possibility.

of course, you guys have Surf N Turf every year, but it would be nice to incorporate Central California into the annual AllCal circuit.

thanks in advance for any recommendations!

This should be something we discuss over some Jameson and a large camp fire at SNT!
works for me!
I like the Bald Mountain idea from the photos I've seen but I have never been there. We need to hear from someone about the camping availability. For me, mountains would be best, but a winter run in the Mojave would be good also. What about Last Chance Canyon & Red Rock area? Oh well, some thoughts to ponder over a wee dram!
The Kid and I just got back from Sequoia National Forest....ran a couple trails, had to turn back on one....too hairy for a solo run! There are three officially designated offroad trails, I have done most of two of them...a couple technical spots, steep rocky climbs I will see if I can post a couple pics tonight. There are alternate routes on one trail, but for most of either run anyone should be able to handle it with a stock truck....we did! Everything else is mostly just forest service roads, but it is right in between Kings Canyon NP and Sequoia NP, so lots to see, and many groups campsites. I agree though it is something that is better discussed next to the campfire with a nice drink!
lookin' forward to speaking with you guys regarding this. i think we may have to designate a certain time to do this since CentCalFJ will be working the Metal Tech booth and Guda will probably be playing in the sand all day. i'll probably hang at base camp most of the time outside of a couple day runs and an infamous night run, but let's definitely figure out a time to discuss an AllCal in CentCal.
We will need to have the central valley crowd involved, those that have run the Bald Mountain trails, so Friday evening before the campfire or the night runs might be good. Did you decide if you are going to head up on Wed or Thur? I still want to meet you there to set up the 5th wheel, so I will plan to arrive whenever you guys get there. Teri is going to bring the FJ up after she gets off work on Thursday night.
still in final discussion of whether to head out on Wednesday or Thursday. the more i'm thinking, the more i'm leaning towards early Thursday morning to get on the beach with a sandwich for lunch. i'll keep you posted!
I know there are a couple of very large camp areas on the forest rd near Bald Mtn. Many more options in the area, Dinkey Creek, Courtright, Huntington, Edison... I will scout out the area before the snow this year if AllCal is not going to be further south, Mojave. It would be nice if anyone one in the area could start checking out some different trails/fire roads & post a report w/ photos.
awesome...that would be cool. finding a group camp area is my main concern.
I was planning to go up Wed 11/24, but it looks like it will be snowing till then. Camp sites will be under a couple feet of snow.

I know of a big site at 37° 7'29.60"N, 119°10'30.60"W, this where Trail Gear has a two day event, http://www.trail-gear.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=44315#post44315
I may be up at Bald wheeling this weekend ill see if I can get any pics whil im there.
We were thinking of heading up toward the Shaver area this Friday, but if the snow is too deep may go to Sequoia side. Will post report and pics when we get home.
