(Confirmed) Eldorado National Forest will be closed to 4x4's for 2012

Eldorado Announcement

Just had this sent to me. I am scouring the interwebs for more information and will update this post as I read and gather more information. To confirm or bust this information. I'm hoping it's a bad joke.

From pirate4x4's land use forum

It may sound dramatic.

Well but the environmentalist exaggerate. 4x4 owners pay a lot of taxes (more gas etc) and now they close the trails?

Perception is everything. That doesn’t make it fair. It’s just the way it works for any group or person. Environmental groups all well funded, and all it takes is one photo of damaged areas, or of an actual idiot doing something stupid off-road for them to use as ammo. We have to support groups like Tread Lightly & others to help fight the negative perceptions being spread.

People fear what they do not understand.

I just talked to my Forest Service contact.

Since we have a volunteer agreement with the FS for the Long Canyon Trail, we will be allowed, under a special use permit, to continue maintaining the trail.

We need to put together a list of projects to complete and submit it to the FS.

What ever I can do to help, let me know. I am only a phone call away.

Absolutely, any help you need at all for Long Canyon D call GHOST :-).

But what is the punishment if one drives the trail anyway?

Don't do that. Although we do not agree with the decision to close those trails, that does not help the cause in anyway. I would assume tho you would get a fine.

OK but I think it's a right to know what is the punishment. I do not plan to visit Eldorado anyway (and use local services, stores, gas etc) anyway after news like this.

Understandable. I don't know what the fine would be but there would be a fine I assume and worse give the groups who want trails closed ammunition.

Well do we know the official reason why the trails were closed?
