FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hey All,
After finding out that Geico would not insure a modified vehicle (the winch and the 3" lift do not make them happy) i'm switching insurance companies. So far it looks like the following are much more off road friendly:

Allstate - although you only get 1000$ for aftermarket stuff and no option to insure for more
AAA - 4" lift max, go higher then that and they won't be happy, You can insure aftermarket items.
Nationwinde - 4" lift max. You can insure aftermarket items, 1500 is built into their policy...anything above that costs you extra.

*The three above also mentioned that I would be covered while "camping" or getting to a "camping" location.

Curious to what other folks are using, espeically those with a 6" lift or daily drivers. Cheers!

I called my insurance company yesterday to talk about my policy. I have allstate and I asked about damages that may occur while camping/hunting. I was told that if you were to hit an animal (deer) and loose control, the damages would be covered under collision. If you backed into something, hit a rock, etc, they will pay for the damage, minus the deductible, but it's likely your rates will go up because it's your fault.

I never asked about aftermarket products. I'll call them later in the week and ask.
I have Allstate and I have been very happy with them. When rats got into my car and chewed up my wires they covered all of the $3,000 cost. Never asked about lifts and stuff. I have all my insurance through them.
statefarm, or progressive
I have geico....so I'd better change asap. Sucks though because they're cheap. Esty, do you have any idea how much more any of these other insurance company's premiums are?
I ended up going with allstate, they gave me a 20% discount because I had my home owners with them as well. Here is an example of the changes in price so you get an idea:

For 2 Cars (FJ Cruiser & Scion TC):

Geico (6month): 939$
AAA (6 month): 1150$
Nationwide(6 month): 1267$ (this included an extra 3000$ in aftermarket goody protection in addition to there 1500 base protection...total 4500$)
Allstate (6 month): 1066$ (only 1000$ in aftermarket goody protection, also includes a discount for having the homeowners with them). To get the lowest price with them I had to get rid of all of there ticket/accident forgiveness packages.

I'm going to end up going with Allstate, The way i see it Some of the goodies off the FJ can be pretty easily removed..IE bumper, winch, roofrack, bud builts etc.. What I would be loosing on would be the tires and suspension and I think 1000$ for that is low but I can somewhat justify it in my head. Also they are giving me an additional 20% off my homeowners....which is effectivly making it even cheaper then geico! :-D.
Yep getting all your insurance from one carrier will normally give you a big discount all everything..
Thanks for the info esty...
I, and almost all of my friends have had State Farm. The rates were always low, but somehow, 2 weeks into the policy, the rates will go up. This happened to me once in November, and I canceled the policy the next day.

The worst was a friend of mine who had state farm tell him 3 of his cars were his primary vehicle because they were all too new. Rates went up $2000/year.

I went to Farmers, and am quite happy.
If any of you have served in the military, USAA is got to be the best insurance company ever.
No one yet can touch their rates, and they are incredibly nice to deal with. They have financed our last 2 cars (great rates!), and they also handle my 401K (or whats left of it). To put the cherry on top, they predict claim costs at the start of the year, and will REFUND you if claims are lower. This has meant a check for $60 to $150 every year.
The only catch is that you have to have been in the military (used to have to be an officer), or a family member has to have it.
In my case, my grandfather was an officer in the army and got me in. He has passed but I can have USAA for life.

If you qualify, you would be nuts not to check it out!
X2 the deals ADT cuts for USAA members is crazy they pay next to nothing and get a full boat system
We arfe also with USAA and they are great and take care of repairs in no time flat.
Nice info...I have liberty and they said that they cover the vehicle as long as it's OHV parks...
Looks like I'll be looking into Nationwide...
