Hi, last year at SlickRock I was talking to somebody (as usual I do not remember who, but I think he had a dark-painted truck) about this app for the iphone to log fuel usage. What app was that? I see there is a popular one but the ratings are quite low...

Hey there... I think that was me!

I have an app called simply MPG. I just looked in the app store, but it is nowhere to be found. The URL for the author of this app also goes nowhere... so it doesn't look like its available. Bummer!

OK thanks anyway, was it a "free" app? Tell me something: did it work that every time you fill the tank you input how many gallons, the price per gallon and the miles on the car's odometer, and it collect statistics this way?

Was it possible to compensate for the different size of tires?

I had MPG and used it from day 1 of when I bought my FJ brand new. Things were going great until it crashed and I lost all my data. If your serious about this, I would do it via pen and paper AND excel or whatever. Don't get me wrong, I liked MPG, but the platform to back up your data was not that great (who knows..maybe things have changed.) As of now, it was a waste $5. (yes I paid for the app because I had a new car and wanted to track it's performance). I'm sure there are better things out there now.

Yes I'm using the "notepad" application that come with the phone and I would like to back it up with Dropbox. And ideally I would also import it in Google Docs... I also bought an application once, the phone crashed and the application disappeared. Wasted 3 dollars, it was to find the cheapest gas around. I will never give any more money to software developers, not even 1 dollar...

I use fuelly.com, it's a webbased application that makes it cross-platform for any mobile device.

I thought about doing a web-based thing, but with AT&T you cannot rely on having data connection at every gas station ;)

That's why when I don't have coverage I write the mileage on a receipt and input it later in coverage or from hom on my laptop.

I use a simple spreadsheet on my Blackberry. You can compensate for anything you can write a formula for in a spreadsheet.

Yeah this is probably the best approach. Ideally this spreadsheet would be automatically shared between phone and computers. OK good, I saved a couple of dollars!

I use a spreadsheet and Dropbox

Exactly, I think this could be the very best solution. I know I cannot rely on anything that involves paper, because many times the receipt is not printed, or I cannot find a pen, or I lose it :)

Now... what spreadsheet application is there for the iphone? :(

You should always carry a pen and paper in your truck for

  • Emergency note if you have to leave your vehicle.
  • to exchange information incase of a accident
  • to take down a license plate to report
  • log mileage
  • to give your number to a cute girl (or guy)

Analog is generally faster then digital in the spur of the moment.
