FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Ok a post about the FJC for a change.

I"m trying to figure out that I want to do tire wise my current tires are pretty much end of life. ProComp Xtreme MT's I've had them for 4 years now and 50k miles so not too shabby for a MT. The problem lies that when I bought them 4 years ago ProComp tires were a bargin compared to everything else out there. When I got them there were 220 bucks a tire for a 285 70r17 now they are running about 330 bucks a tire.

So I'm looking at the following

  • BFG KM2
  • Goodyear MT/R
  • Cooper Discoverer STT
  • Firestone Destination MT

All are about the same price in the mid 200's

I really liked the performance of the ProComps but the price is killing me. From what I understad the Coopers are the same as the ProComps since Cooper makes the ProComp tires, but I don't know of anyone that has run the Coopers.

I really want to stay with one of tires I listed but if you have a good argument for another I'll listen, but I am staying with a MT style tire and not looking for a AT.

Out of all those I've run the KM2s and the old GY MTR's.  I really liked the KM2s so +1 for those.  If I didn't drive the runner so much I'd get another set, so AT's were the way to go for me.  I've heard good things about the new MTR's, PB has them on his 80.

Check here,  this is how I made my decision on the very well priced Kumho MT KL71s.  Lots of reviews from real owners.

Ive had the bfg and the coopers now. They are both mudders. I'd recommend them both.

I do have the new MTR's with Kevlar and picked mine up in Dec for just over $200 a tire from a local GY dealer. They are quiet and smooth for an MT and would not mind them on a DD. I drove the 80 to Moab in April and was happy with the them on and off road.

It is not on your list, but my ProComp Extreme AT,s have been really good off road and on. They at not as aggressive as the MT's, but are much more so than the other AT's. They have a 40,000 mile warranty as well.
When I bought mine they were in the low 200's.

I got the same set and have gotten a crazy amount of miles and fun outta them the Extreme ATs have been awesome

4wheelparts is having a sale on BF Goodrich mud terrain KM2s right now
