FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hey guys and gals, my buddy gave me a CB radio today and I could use some help.  It's a Midland 1001z.  All I got was the unit, microphone, and power/ground wires as pictured.  I'm guessing I just need to get an antenna w/ mount, and the cable to run to it?  Is there a spot in the fuse box to run the power to or where would you recommend?  Also when I was at the AllCal meet I saw many of you had antenna mounts that replaced part of the rear door hinge.  Where can I purchase one of those?  Whats a good antenna? and how did you guys run your wires? Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Thanks,

Robbie

Look up BOz-Tec for his newly designed rear Antenna mount.

You will need and antenna (fire stick is popular) cable to go from the CB to the antenna.

Get and Add a circuit for your fuse box. This will allow you to tap power from your existing fuse box and wire it up. Find a ground of course.
most guys run Firestik antennas. the antenna mount you refer to is commonly known as the "Bandi Mount" as that was the first antenna mount designed by a respected member of the FJ Community. however, they are prone to rusting issues, so BozTec produced a CB antenna mount made of all-stainless steel to reduce rust potential. i'll let someone else handle the electrical aspects of your question.
Hey Robbie, we can get you set up real quick, run the power to the batt.make sure you get a good ground and the antenna to the rear corner, drivers side the Boz antenna mount is definitely the way to go, if you have more questions shoot me a PM or gimme a call

thanks for the quick reply's! Do you guys prefer the firestik or firestik II and 2 or 3 feet? I'm not sure how many watts is necessary?
I would go with a firestik II 3-4 feet and don't forget a spring too
You have a spring? My spring failed this weekend. I did not plan to get another.
There is a real nice 4' Wilson Silver Tip lying on the trail somewhere in Hollister.
bummer. Did it break or come loose? Some have trouble tuning with the spring. I've had no trouble with mine though.
Well now that I think about it, it was the quick disconnect that failed. The pin that runs through it to hold the quick disconnect came out.
Man I have that exact same radio new in the box.
I am also wondering about the best way to mount it and run the cables.
If you need a copy of the owners manual I can try to scan it and send it to you.
Thanks for all the help guys, I found a guy in Campbell that might be able to hook my up with everything. Its the install thats going to be the fun part....... As for the manual I found a site that let me download a PDF of it, but thanks anyways. Right now I'm planning on getting the 3' firestik, antenna stud mount, medium duty spring, 18' cable, and the Bz mount.
PS~ once I eventually get it all installed is there anyone near Redwood City that has a SWR meter that could help me tune it?
I have a meter but I'm in the East east Bay. If you don't find someone closer or sooner I'm sure we can hook up at a meetNgreet or a run or arrange to meet sooner.
