2010 FJ maintenance question.

Hey guys,

I just bought a 2010 FJ with 58K miles on it. I dont know where it has been and frankly I dont care. I just care about where it will take me tomorrow. My question is what kind of maintenance should i get done with that many miles on it? Does anyone have a list of oils/fluids that should be changed? Also, when should I upgrade my shocks? The stock ones ride nice (compared to my old truck anything feels nice i guess lol).

You should get the big 60k service done. All fluids replaced, along with typical oil change, tire rotation, etc. I think there's a few other things, but I can't remember. I would check the owner's manual. But 60k is definitely a big maintenance point.

Do you have the Bilsteins on now? Judging by the wheels you have, it looks like you have the offroad package?

Would the dealership be the best place to get this big service done? And yes I do have the off road package. Not sure if its the TRD shocks but they are blue (if the color help)?? Thanks

Only take he FJ to a dealer for warranty work or recalls.

I found my mechanic this way 20 years ago and he has worked on all our families cars and we have never had an issue with his work.

Find yourself an independent Toyota specialist - in Mountain View, Yarnell's is really good.

Check Yelp, Diamond Certified, BBB, etc., to determine who should do the the work. Rarely would I take the vehicle to the dealer, especially if it's out of warranty.

I believe those are the Bilsteins. They are pretty decent shocks.

Unless you're thinking about getting a lift, I don't see a reason to change them out.

I have a pair of Bilstein struts from the 2010 offroad package with 12k mostly-road miles on, taking up space in my garage since I upgraded to the 5100's, in case anyone needs a pair. I'm still running the original rear shocks, but may upgrade some day....

Do the fluid changes yourself and save a ton of money! Fjs are so easy to work on. I've done all my spark plug and fluids myself...even changed the drive belt! Buy a grease gun...grease the drive train after every oil change.

I have always worked on my own cars and never really took it to a shop for oil changes/tune ups. I'm new to the FJ world so was thinking about taking it somewhere. But if you say its easy I will gladly change all the fluids myself. How hard are fluids to change for the diff and transfer case. Where do you get new fluids from? Thanks

I use the Toyota synthetic motor oil and their red coolant. The FJCs 2010+ are all spec'd for synthetic fluids everywhere - a lot of guys like Amsoil around here. I use Redline myself. The Toyota stuff is good and fairly priced.
